They told me to Shimmer

I wasn't always this sparkly,
it all happened so suddenly.
Mom was in and out of sanatorium,
I didn't know any homebase,
probably until tenth grade.
They changed my face, my hair, my name.
all to gain a little fame.
and it was fun in the beginning,
until I stopped thinning.
They told me to shimmer,
but I just wanted it dimmer.
They told me to dazzle,
until the judge hit the gavel.
They told me to shut up and smile,
Just screaming I'm a juvenile.
That fescennine little girl,
as innocent as a pearl.
Who stole her?
I did what they told me,
hoping I'd land on a marquee.
They tell me I'm an object of the male gaze
but who cares as long as the job pays.
They tell me to act like I like it,
what if I told you I'm a hypocrite.
I had sordid affairs,
my lovers playing a game of musical chairs.
They told me to shimmer,
but I just wanted it a little dimmer.
They told me to dazzle,
until the judge hit the gavel.
They told me to shut up and smile,
Just screaming I'm a juvenile.
That fescennine little girl,
as innocent as a pearl.
Who stole her?
I thought I was just numbing the pain,
and it started as just a little mary jane.
I thought I couldn't cause real damage,
but I guess I was at a disadvantage.
No one told me that those pills could kill,
no one helped me from that house on capital hill.
They told me to shimmer,
but I just wanted it a little dimmer.
They told me to dazzle,
until the judge hit the gavel.
They told me to shut up and smile,
Just screaming I'm a juvenile.
That fescennine little girl,
as innocent as a pearl.
Diamonds aren't a girls best friend,
that was just a trike toward a dead end.
I was never the blond bombshell they made me,
I just wanted to live life as carefree
as I could.
But they didn't let me,
no they didn't let me.
Who stole her?
