When I Was Her

I cross wobbly wooden bridges.

I fly across the meadow.

I look under the mossy oak and the pebbles on the path.

I search for hours upon hours trying to find her.

I pass the fairy garden with spider webs on the post.

I ask the black widow if she's seen the little girl I'm looking for.

I light the candle in my lantern,

I pass the ditch with the broken handlebars,

I go up and down this street for eternity

hoping to find her.

I check the neighbors house,

she loved to play with their dog.

I check the trail along the powerline, that she used to run and hide in.

I search this town, inch by inch,

brick by brick.

I head down to the old treehouse,

only to see its rotted now.

I drive along to the trail she used to run on,

I walk up the drive of that big white mansion that she always dreamed of getting married in.

I try and I try but I can't find her light.

I ask the bluebirds she used to sing with if they've seen her around.

They don't hear becuase they just had a new baby but I remember,

when that new baby was them.

Trees wilt, colors fade, but baby I wanna find you a better place.

Somewhere to keep your spirit alive,

somewhere that you can hide.

I finally check the path on the way to rainbow falls,

she hated walking there but she always loved the view at the end.

Maybe she got stuck there,

yellow daisies in her hair,

running around, playing with the trees.

She gave life to things that didn't have any yet,

she brought the breath right back to the dead.

But that's when I see,

the big stone on the ground labeled me.

I've been searching all this time for someone that doesn't exist anymore.

I lay a rose down,

I say a prayer now.

I tell her thank you,

for being all I ever wanted to be,

I'll try to find you inside me again.

I blew out the candle in my lantern,

I headed home.

I sat down in my big ole bed and swore to myself,

I will never forget when I was her.
